How we work
We review the brief, meet the people involved and examine the existing plans and research. We then develop a proposal setting out the work, budget, schedule and responsibilities. As the commission progresses, the designs and production plans are reviewed with the client before major decisions are finalised.

Research
We study the subject, site and audience through observation, interviews, site visits and existing research. We also consider budget, access and technical requirements from the outset.
Direction
We develop the concept, programme and visual or spatial direction, with references and proposals for the client to review. The approved direction is documented in briefs for design and production.
Development & delivery
Drawings, models, prototypes and material studies develop the approved direction into something that can be made. We work with specialists on technical details and production documentation. For full commissions, we also oversee installation, opening and handover.
Commissioning
We take on research, creative direction, design and production assignments. Each proposal defines 54’s responsibilities and the work to be delivered.
Consultation & diagnosis
Research into an existing space, programme, proposal or question, presented as an appraisal, workshop or set of recommendations. The client can take the findings forward independently.
Creative direction
Development of a concept, narrative, programme or visual direction, supported by references and briefs for the people who will design and produce it.
Design & development
Development of an agreed concept into layouts, drawings, prototypes, specifications and other materials required for production.
Full commission
54 leads the project through research, creative direction, design and production, coordinating the people and resources involved through to delivery.
Review & intervention
An assessment of a project already in development or production. We review the existing plans, designs and arrangements, recommend revisions and agree any further involvement with the client.
Working arrangements
Proposals set out the scope, deliverables, fees, responsibilities and timetable for each appointment. We agree the points at which work will be reviewed and approved, and discuss changes to the brief or budget before they are implemented.
Commission
Send us a brief or a short description of the project, including its location and proposed dates where available.
